Its composition often includes multiple layers: a surface layer of bleached chemical pulp, a middle layer of cheaper waste paper pulp, and a bottom layer that may vary depending on the grade. This structure balances cost-efficiency with performance, allowing it to meet both aesthetic and functional requirements in packaging.

Its surface boasts high whiteness, smoothness, and excellent ink absorption, which are crucial for achieving sharp, vibrant prints in offset gravure printing. From a sustainability perspective, many grades utilize recycled pulp in their middle layers, with some products containing over 80% waste paper, reducing their environmental footprint. Additionally, the single-sided coating (common in gray-backed versions) offers a cost-effective solution without compromising the visible surface’s quality.   • By Quality Grade: It is often divided into A, B, and C grades. B-grade may incorporate high-quality white waste paper, while C-grade uses more economical materials, suitable for less demanding applications.
  • By Backing Material: The two primary types are white-backed and gray-backed (or gray-bottom) paperboard. The gray-backed variant, which uses untreated waste paper pulp in its middle and bottom layers, is more prevalent due to its cost advantage—typically about 25% cheaper than white-backed board.
  • By Coating Sides: There is single-sided coated white board (common for gray-backed types) and double-sided coated white card (often used for high-end, double-sided printing).

4. Manufacturing Process Overview

The production of coated white board paper involves a sophisticated, multi-stage process. It begins with pulp preparation, where raw materials like wood pulp or waste paper are broken down, cleaned, and refined. This pulp is then formed into a base paperboard using a multi-layer forming process that strategically places different pulp qualities in the surface, middle, and back layers for optimal performance and cost.

The critical coating stage follows, where a mixture of white pigments and binders is applied to one or both surfaces using techniques like air-knife or blade coating. This coated paperboard then passes through dryers to remove moisture and calenders (polishing rollers) to achieve the desired smoothness and gloss. Finally, the large rolls are slit and cut into standard sheet sizes, such as 787mm x 1092mm or 880mm x 1230mm, for distribution.

Thanks to its appealing appearance and protective qualities, coated white board paper is widely used in mid-to-high-end consumer goods packaging. It is the material of choice for cigarette cases, cosmetic boxes, pharmaceutical packaging, and food cartons like those for confectionery and frozen foods. Its ability to be die-cut and folded makes it perfect for creating folding cartons of various shapes and sizes.

Beyond boxes, it serves as the face layer for corrugated cardboard in point-of-sale displays and premium shipping boxes, enhancing shelf appeal. Some specialized types, like Clay Coated (Kemi) White Board, are particularly valued in digital printing for retail displays because their surface prevents ink from sinking in, resulting in vibrant colors.

The coated white board paper industry is continuously evolving, with a strong focus on technological advancement and sustainability. Modern production lines are becoming faster and wider; for instance, new plants in China feature paper machines with widths up to 4500mm and speeds reaching 500 meters per minute, significantly boosting output.

There is a growing emphasis on increasing the use of recycled fibers in production. The industry’s average waste paper utilization rate has seen a substantial increase, aligning with global circular economy goals. Furthermore, manufacturers are developing functional coatings and refining processes to enhance printability and strength while reducing basis weight, contributing to source reduction.
